I live in Manchester, flew from there to Copenhagen this morning. Gave an “up the blues” to two separate bluenoses on my way through, then saw a third at arrivals in Copenhagen.

Unfortunately, a Danish bloke in a 90s Villa shirt has just served me a pint in Nørrebro.

It got me thinking: how far afield have you seen something blues related? I lived in Canada for a year and saw a Stephen Carr vs the North Stand sticker in Toby’s Bar in Toronto.

I know from having carried out a couple of surveys on here in the past that the average age of posters is well over 50, so:

When that bowel cancer screening kit drops through your letter box (it's sent every two years to everyone aged 50-75, but you can still ask for one if you're outside that age bracket) asking you to get a tiny sample of your poo, just do it and send it back asap - whether you've got any symptoms or not.

Nationally, 1 in 3 people don't do so and in Birmingham, in parts of the city, it can be as high as 6 in 10 that don't bother.

I sent my sample back in late February as I always do. No symptoms.

Repeat. No symptoms.

A week or two later, got a call from saying tge results were suspect so I had a colonoscopy (a camera up the bum that check out your bowel- uncomfortable but not painful at all). Got kept behind afterwards and was told by the chap carrying out the procedure that they'd found a tumour which he ( being a former surgeon) suspected was bowel cancer. Was given a scan on the same day to check to see if it had spread (it hadn't - first big relief).

So I was diagnosed on 11 March.

6 weeks later, 23rd April, the operation. To remove the tumour and a section of the bowel surrounding plus tissues outside for analysis. Operation was successful. Then it was a case of waiting a few weeks ( the most worrying period if I'm honest) to find out if I'd need any chemo.

Last Tuesday, 2nd June, got the all clear. Obviously very relieved and elated.

11th March diagnosis, 2nd June, all clear. Less than 3 months. And that's the experience of an increasing number of people because their illness was identified at an early stage. Which is the whole point of the screening tests.

Honestly, this isn't a 'look at me, look at me' post. I'm just telling you - yes you- not to ignore that testing kit because doing that test might just save your life, or a long period of follow up chemo and pain. I didn't 'fight it', I wasn't brave, I just did what I was told, went to sleep for four hours while they operated, woke up with no real pain, laughably minor wounds (keyhole surgery) which have now pretty much disappeared, and recovered.

So that's it. Just do the test. I don't want any best wishes, thumbs ups or whatever - in fact I'll put you on ignore if you do. Just do the fecking test, or, if you've got any symptoms ( blood in poo, unexplained weight loss, even tiredness, see your GP/ send off for a test kit.
