Airport query

Hi SHA

So I'm off to Dublin Wednesday morning and it's my first venture abroad on my own.

I've got a real simple question - how long before my flight should I get to the airport?

I've already checked in and we're only taking hand luggage. Do I give it an hour, hour and a half or two hours?

Can only vouch for Ryan air, if you want your hand luggage close to you, it might pay you to get there a couple of hours before, unless you booked priority seats and even then your luggage could still end up at the back of the plane or even in the luggage hold.

All depends on how casual you are about things.

Don't the gates open like an hour before the plane takes off?

Seems a bit silly to arrive only an hour before. In case something goes wrong.
I have an answer for everything.

I won't lie Slammer, that sounds a little cryptic and now I'm slightly concerned.

That's what I'm wondering. Hour and a half?

Deeb it's a flight not a bus that if you miss it another one will come along in half an hour.

FFS get there 2 hours before take off time, book in then a couple of beers. No worries then.
Thanks for keeping us up Gary

An hour should be enough with only hand luggage but, as mentioned above, be prepared for your hand luggage to have to go in the hold. Only the first few in the queue at the gate can get their hand luggage in the cabin.

Indeed, particularly as there's 15-20 minute wait to get through security

Thanks Mo, we're reliant on a lift you see so it's a case of what's the latest we can feasibly get there without it being a risk.

FYI at Dublin its about a mile walk from the gate to immigration.
OK if you are fit and well, but a real slog if, like me, you have breathing difficulties.
Its also a long way if you, unlike me, wear high heels.

Remember how far it is when you are coming back, as you have to leave enough time to get to the gate after the slog through security.
Regards, Mick

I get the 8 a.m. flight a couple of times a month from BHX.

I get there around 7. Stroll through security go for a sh*t get on the plane. Not missed a flight yet.

If your hand luggage goes in the hold it isn't insured.

Years ago I was sat drinking with a mate late on a Friday afternoon at the White Swan in Harborne. He was going on a plane for the first time in his life later that day and flying up to Edinburgh for the weekend of shagging and I'd offered to take him to the airport.

Anyway we are sat in the pub at 5.35 pm and I ask him what time his flight is at and he says 6.30! I said the plane's not like a feckin bus and you should have been there a good hour or more before the flight time. We leg it out of the pub and I drive like a madman and get him to the airport for 6.15. Back then you could get right to the terminal door. Thankfully he just about managed to get his flight although they were paging him by name.:D

Depending on what time you're going (and assuming you have your boarding card already too), I would aim to be there about an hour before the flight time. The security queue can be a real pinch point and could take anything between 5 or 40 minutes to get through. As such I would head through that as soon as possible and then you can relax and have a beer until called to the gate.

I like to get to airports a good few hours before take off to check out the crisp flavours and offers in WHSMith, and get a full English breakfast in before boarding the plane.

Enjoy thumbs up

Nope, I'm asking what your point is.

I'm presuming you think it's 'bad' that someone hasn't traveled abroad on their own. Why?
