If youre going off the zola era then would you want any of our players?

Give the guy a chance under a proper manager.

Just said I would give him a chance but that does not mean he doesn't have anything to prove.

On a side note yes we still had a few players who were still able to perform despite Zola (Davis, Adams to name two). Team selections were poor etc but its also worth noting that everything in Zola's philosophy was set up for Gardner to thrive (three in midfield, an advanced role, technical game etc) that wasn't necessarily suitable for most of our other players.

You missed the most important bit.

Is he a better playmaker than Gleeson? The answer is of course a resounding yes.

Harry had 3 games. In one of them Gardner scored and set up the other goal.

If Harry wants him lets get it done and over the line fast so that we can move forward and get more in.

Downing

Is he better than maghoma? Yes
Is he better than cotterill? Yes
Would it mean Gardner stops taking free kicks and corners... yes

Could he play left back better than grounds? For debate.. but an option

Is he better than Frei? Probably and is better defensively, definitely a good option.

He's the best footballer of that lot but it doesn't mean he'll fit into the team. He won't replace Mags as a hard working winger for a start.

Isn't Gleeson meant to be a playmaker hence the comparison.

By the end of last season it was hard to tell if Gleeson was a footballer let alone a specific role like playmaker

He looked like a ballboy that had wandered onto the pitch

He's one of those players who has never lived up to his potential and when the going gets tough disappears. Not for me.

I'm trusting that Harry can get the best out of him, because while he was at vile, Downing was great - in that I mean he couldn't give a feck and disappeared as soon as the other side got the ball. He's a good footballer, but only when he can be arsed.
Thanks for keeping us up, Harry.

So Downing is going to sit in front of the defence as a deep-lying playmaker is he??? He's be even more lightweight than 'powderpuff' Gleeson.

Tbf to Gleeson, he was an important member of Rowett's counter-attacking Blues team but the change in system last season saw his flaws highlighted. Regardless, he's been a good servant to Blues.

Don't want him. He's 33 next week, wasn't great in Boro's promotion season 2 years ago, and did absolutely nothing last season.

Getting rid of Frei and replacing him with Downing would be mental.
We've just signed Robbo who is 38 and people are moaning about Downing :D

Feck me with a cactus tree, not long back we signed Brock Madsen , Lowry, Legzdins and Buckley and people were more positive
The difference is, all things being well Robinson should have minimal to no gametime this season and is on low wages. Downing is on massive wages and would be signed as a first team player, which is a problem as he is old, shit, and has been out of form for years.

Rather than using previous signings which didn't work out as a reason why we should never have any future ambition in the transfer market, we could and should put our limited budget towards a more sensible signing than Stewart Downing.

Who says we are getting rid of Frei?

Secondly the meltdown on here is entertaining to watch.
Reminds me of when we signed Bowyer. 'Too old', 'done nothing recently'.

He turned out to be really poor, especially when he scored against Chelsea/Wolves/Arsenal.
Poor in the cup final too (should have been a pen)

Frei will go - he didn't fly back to England with the squad. Istanbul Basaksehir are confident of doing a deal very soon.
