Report: Blues 0 Derby County 3

Birmingham City
17:26, Saturday 13 January 2018
Blues fell to defeat to Derby County at St. Andrew's as the promotion-chasing visitors clinically put their hosts to the sword. The final scoreline was perhaps a little harsh on Steve Cotterill's side who had their moments, particularly early on, and Jonathan Grounds was twice denied by the woodwork,

Unlucky today

Ilfrablue replying to Birmingham City
17:50, Saturday 13 January 2018
More possession, more shots and more passes against a team 2nd in the table with half a season of momentum behind them. At times our passing and movement made Derby look average.

If Grounds' efforts hit a sweeter part of the post we may well have got something today. Classic Championship game with a deflected shot swinging the game showing the horribly fine margins.

Some more quality up top today and it would have taken the pressure of our defence. Unfortunately that wasn't the case and we were picked off by Premier League finishing. Hopefully the players put this behind them and continue the good performances of late. We won't get relegated KRO

Post Match Thoughts

We dominated the first half.

Derby completely took any wind we had out of the game with the constamt rugby tackling and dragging players down and pushing our players over and shirt pulling.

We hit the post twice and were hit twice on the counter and a pass that was deflected in, it was nothing more than luck.

We played a club that is 2nd in the league, they are 2nd for a reason. I think we would lose to Barcelona and our fans would demand Cotterill out saying we shouldnt have lost.

3 wins in 4 is great form for any club.

Roberts needs to stop his hoofing because it never reaches the man.

Kieftenbelds only skill is running around a lot. He has no technical ability and should be replaced immediately.

Davis was lively first half and Gardner is always showing for the ball and did some great play in the first half.

Gallagher seemed a bit over confident following his recent form, but thats not always a bad thing.

Grounds did great again against the toughest wingers to play against in this division bar Wolves.

We dominated the ball, the space, the play, the movement but we don't have that technical ability in the middle and that golden touch up front.

This league is pretty equal, everyone can beat everyone. The winner in most games is who gets the lucky chance fall to them.

Burton lost, Sunderland lost, Bolton lost, Reading, Hull, Barnsley all drew. We didnt have a bad week in terms of results. Lets kick on next week and pick off where we left off.

This result against this team is not that significant.

What I mean is that while Wolves are a prem team in waiting, with power, height, skill, strength, pace and skill in all key positions competing with them is not really an option. Derby are not comparable with Wolves but they have cornered the market in experienced, if not ageing, champs players who are good, very good if not good enough for the prem. They are tough, solid and counter attack well. Hope they continue to win plenty, not least to undermine the Villa.

These two look the best teams in the division and we need to survive. We created chances, hit the post twice and had some half chances. Our weaknesses remain but we are now a better team than the rabble before xmas. Having only one player in central midfield who can pass the ball and the centre backs doing some aimless hoofing meant we could not break down an obdurate team once they scored that unfortunate deflected first goal.

Our previous three games show we can now compete with the duffers and hopefully average teams in the division. More skill in the centre of the park would help if we are to break teams down as we now have players like Maghoma (excellent today), Gallagher (very good again), Adams (did well) and Boga (mercurial) to help us create, counter attack and penetrate other teams.

Some grounds for optimism, then. We are weak compared with the top two but have a bit of hope.

However no one was as crap as Davis and Kieftenbeld.

Colin offered little either today

Agree with that.

We are not very good, Cotterill is very defensive but some are being too negative. Derby are far better than us, buying up decent champs players for the last 4 years. They now look solid, strong, four huge defenders, pace and creativity up front. They are a good team for this division. But our task is to compete against he duffers and the other teams not Wolves or Derby.

We dominated the first half. AGREE.....

DISAGREE.The table doesn't lie. ....

We played with great intensity and good pressing before the 1st goal, and I liked the way we played the ball out from the back - i.e. through the midfield.
We were very unlucky in that 1st half.

The 2nd half was entirely different. Our midfield went AWOL and Roberts in particular went for hopeless random long balls, mostly over-hit. Our heads were down and we played largely on the back foot, lacking shape; discipline and concentration. Derby completely dominated the midfield, created lots of good opportunities and could easily have won 0-5.

We went back to our normal bad ways early in that 2nd half, with most players losing form. Fitness and desire both questionable. Manager had negligible impact on the game, and came out with delusional post match comments as usual. Boga was awful, but then most were awful - apart from Maghoma.

I felt good at HT; depressed again at FT.

Walsh was never the answer IMO. We need a couple of experienced midfielders who are proven at this level. We've got too many young hopefuls as it is.

Most decent players won't want to come to Blues but, If possible, take (on loan) one or two senior players (late 20s) who are out of favour at their parent clubs and desperate for pitch time. Trouble is, Gardner was in that category, and he's yet to prove worthwhile - though I suspect he was carrying an injury for a long time, so fingers crossed that he will get there in the next few weeks.

I’m trying to think of one...

Interesting to read about how well Walsh played for 5th placed Bristol City

“Always showing for the ball”
“A class above anyone else on the pitch”

Hmmm
