What was the first world cup you remember?
1966 for me, watching most of the games on a black and white tele and after the final lots of mates over the park for a massive game of football

66 for me, as well. I remember all the flags around the city centre and the Argentina squad staying at the Albany. My granddad went to see a couple of the games at Vile Park.

I clearly remember an episode from the 1970 one. Aged 4 or 5 I declared that one of the Brazil players was a fanny.

Two minutes later I was in my uncles kitchen chewing on a bar of soap having found out it wasn’t an official position for any team.

Although a vague recollection from 1966 (aged about one) was from a World Cup game where mum took us out to watch the “foreigners” arrive in a crowd at the sheds. No clue what game that was

France 98. Still remember more about that World Cup than probably any since.

I was obsessed by it, Panini books, FIFA game. I wanted anything that had that little cockerel fella on it.

This. Loved every second. Wasn’t there somthing about the Cameroon team doing vodoo on the England players before that game? Looked like it was going to come true at one stage.

All the family watching it in my mom n dads room.

1962 World Cup received zero publicity in England so it wS 66 that kicked it all off! Loved every second!
1970 we had even better team but sadly lost after being 2.0 up v Germany!
Still makes me sad thinking about how we should have reached second final, and with banks back fit( bonnetti played like Colin Doyle in Q.F) who knows what might have happened!

France 98. My first memory is that Michael Owen goal against Argentina. I have clear memories of David Beckham getting sent off (and hating him for it) and David Batty missing a penalty.

The rest of the tournament is a blur as I was only 8

Argentina 78

Ticker tape, itv music, adidas Argentina top (best football top ever) Peru top and everything about it,that world cup had coruppution the lot..

On a side note really gutted after 1982 as I could never wear that Argentina top again due to political circumstances at the time..

78 Argentina was the first that I remember, though the first special one for me really was 82 in Spain (cos it was the first one in my lifetime England had qualified for).

Belter of a tournament, and Trevor Francis was the best England player by a long way.

I genuinely believe England could have won it that year if it hadn't been for the bizzare format which saw a "second group stage". England left the tournament after 5 games undefeated and having conceded only one goal.
