There can't be many of us ex-national servicemen still around who are also bluenoses, so I thought it appropriate to let you all have an opportunity to read what the poppy is all about.

The Poppy
I am not a badge of honour,
I am not a racist smear,
I am not a fashion statement,
To be worn but once a year.

I am not glorification
Of conflict or of war.
I am not a paper ornament
A token, I am more.

I am a loving memory,
Of a father or a son,
A permanent reminder
Of each and every one.

I'm paper or enamel
I'm old or shining new,
I'm a way of saying thank you,
To every one of you.

I am a simple poppy
A Reminder to you all,
That courage faith and honour,
Will stand where heroes fall.

Brilliant.

I served for 11 years and did go to a warzone, and although I got a medal - I didn't go through anything like the fallen heros of the two world wars.

We WILL remember them.

I cry
But I can't buy your Veteran's Day poppy
It don't get me high It can only make me cry
It can never grow another son.
Like the one who warmed me
My days after rain, and warmed my breath
My life's blood Screamin', empty, she cries
It don't get me high It can only make me cry Your Veteran Day poppy

Thanks for posting that Zim. It did a lot to calm my anger at the suggestion posted on here that people buying poppies do it only for selfish reasons (ie to make themselves feel better or less guilty).

It's sad that those who were willing to lay their lives down for others can be used to score points on an internet forum. I'm an ardent pacifist - but that's an "after the event" stance based on the terrible waste of life that happened in the two world wars and in the hope that hopefully never again will people be put through such awful suffering. We should never forget that we owe the very fact that we are allowed to voice our opinions and hold our political beliefs to those who were willing to stand against tyranny then.

Amazing, and really very sad, to think they kept on firing right up to 11am, you have to hope no-one was killed by those last few shells. To think what that silence and to hear birdsongs again must have meant and felt like for those poor chaps
