We looked much better when Bowyer switched to the diamond. The end if 3-5-2 going forward?

We were much better second half

The wing back formation simply does not work with the players we have. It's 5 at the back and as soon as we win the ball we have no options to keep the ball so it's hoofed upfield.

After the switch we looked a marginally better going forwards (lets not go overboard just cos we won) but I thought we looked incredibly open in midfield.

Not sure what the answer is - 4-2-3-1 maybe?
I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it.
Unfortunately, I think a lot of hoofball is to come. This is simply because Chong has gone, McGree is off soon and our midfield will be bereft of control, manipulation, progressive passing and guile.

Don't worry, GG will be back soon...oh, hang on.

If they can find a way to make Woods lack of athleticism not an issue then our ball retention may be a lot better, but that is a big if.

I was always bewildered by the amount of praise that Bannan got as he so seriously hamstrung the team having to cover for his liabilities. It is very hard to find the right balance with those kind of players, kudos to Bowyer if he can achieve it.

4-2-3-1 all day for me if it’s not going to be a old school 4-4-2.
This 5-3-2 he’s been trying tinplate just don’t work in my opinion. Bela is half the player he was 2 years ago, he’s either lacking in confidence or his legs are on the way out. Then we’re asking a L1 average winger to play as wing back which is probably one of the hardest positions to play on the park.
LB is a clever manger and has my support but I’m not sure why he’s preserving with this system, we simply don’t have good enough players for it.
Every single side we’ve come against just play around us and find every single gap we leave by our inability to string more then 3 passes together.

10 clean sheets in twenty games however suggest teams are not playing through us that easily.

Quite a few teams in this league play the same way this season.

I am not sure we have the squad to play any system well consistently. We still lack pace and athleticism.

The football ain’t great but thisis probably our best option we have at present.

We did have our 4th choice CM out today so I put the lack of midfield influence down to that.
Before I start I am not for one minute suggesting LB isn't doing a decent job....however I think he has some limitations and they are starting to affect us.

Firstly he doesn't really seem to have a set philosophy / formation. Over his career he's varied between 3 at the back and 4 with a diamond. It's a personal thing but I like a boss who says "right, this is how I set up, this is how we play" - that seems to be what the best coaches do. Now we've played half a season with 3 at the back he's on about changing it to 4 and a diamond despite us having no CMs. On top of that using 442 in pre-season was ridiculous - surely you bed in whatever system you're gonna use. In short he doesn't know how best to set up and that's not good.

Secondly he too frequently lets our 3 at the back become a 5 with 3 CBs marking 1 CF and our wing backs marking the opposition wide forwards. This invites the opposition FBs to overload us which in turn pulls our CMs wide and deep creating further holes for opposition to exploit in the middle. See all 90 mins at Cov and first half today. In fairness he addressed it at half time and I know Bela and Graham aren't specialist WBs but it has to stop happening, it puts us on the back foot and partly explains why when we do get it back we give it away again - everyone is too deep and nowhere near the front 2.

Thirdly he is married to 2 up front which very few teams use these days. We are poor enough in transition as it is and having 2 players leading the line makes it even harder to retain possession and too easy to lump it long.

Fourth and final. Mark Roberts' long throws. Has to stop now.

Now I fully get that there are valid counterpoints to all the above (except number 4) - the main one being that with our hugely limited squad he's doing pretty well.

I just think we could be a lot better if he addressed some of these things.

Fair play. Good post

He can't win though can he - because if he sticks to one system (and we start to lose games) he'll be accused of inflexibility.

He's limited by the players he has at his disposal, which was not his fault at Charlton nor is it at Blues. That's down to years of poor recruitment. We lack pace and athleticism, and it shows when we play a teams like Coventry. The irony is Coventry have one of the smallest budgets in the division, but it shows it can be done.

Agree with you 100% on Roberts throws, it's getting embarrassing now.

Not a fan of 1 up front though, especially at home. I personally think Deeney and Hogan actually do offer a threat playing up front together.

I'm not disagreeing but I would like to hear who you would pick as the lone forward if he didn't play two up front.

Probably Deeney - he did it at Watford and is good at bringing others into the game.... if there are any others to bring in to the game.

Unfortunately we don't have any obvious candidates to play off him in those inside forward positions.

So maybe LB is right after all.....
