I did think that following the rules strictly but I suppose it
never even crossed the referee’s mind.

It was not a penalty, even the laws say it shouldn’t be a penalty. It hit a hand that was supporting his body.

It was accidental but the Portuguese player would have been through on goal
if it had not hit his hand.

But still not deliberate and wasnt trying to get an advantage

Ive said it before, time to get ex pros as var refs and not people who have have learnt the game by reading a book

How is that a penalty? Completely accidental.

I bet that wouldn’t have been given against Brazil.

Handballs don’t have to be deliberate.

As demonstrated by the shit tier level of punditry on show most weekends ex-pros don’t know the laws of the game any more than fans on terraces or online forums.

I will take your word for it as the laws of the game cover 240 pages on download
and I have looked at laws 13 and 14 and cannot find a mention of what is or is not a direct free kick.

He dived in and missed the ball with his legs.
Stay on his feet and there's no decision to make.

I think the defender is a bit unlucky. He does gain an advantage by it hitting his arm. I don't think it's deliberate handball, but I can see why the penalty is given.

It's not an outrageous decision, if it were Blues attacking i'd want the penalty. If we were defending i'd think it was very harsh.

“It is not an offence if the ball touches a player’s hand/arm:
•when a player falls and the hand/arm is between the body and the ground to support the body, but not extended laterally or vertically away from the body”

So what was it given for? If you are falling and breaking your fall with your hand then that defenders hand was in a totally natural position

The arm was extended vertically away from the body.

It's one of those where it's all about interpretation. It's possible to see how he's gained an advantage and why it might not be a foul. I'm unconvinced there is a definitive right answer.

You can. I saw a lady topple over a row of seats at Blues recently. Absolutely no attempt to break the fall.

She appeared somewhat the worse for wear.

Which is where the clear and obvious error part is just daft
