With all the doom and gloom that’s flying around because we’ve had a couple of poor results (but decent performances) in the last six days, I think it’s interesting to note that we are top of the Championship when it comes to XG stats (according to FootballXG.com) we’re 9th for expected goals for and are easily 1st for XG goals against. When combined were top, with Leicester 2nd, Leeds/Sunderland joint 3rd. I know football is all about results but this shows just how well John 'DvB' Useless has actually got us set up. He can only set the team up to maximise the chances of Winning, he can do nothing about keeper errors or strikers not finishing presentable chances. Add a couple of quality players in key positions and everything changes.
Out of interest- Preston are joint 15th and Albion are 22nd.

So in summary we’re mostly really good but our first choice striker is shit.

Oooofff 😆
Xg is actually a pretty good indicator of how a team is playing and generally teams finish the season roughly in line with their xg position.

Although the other week I had someone say that it's more about possession and once we start dominating the ball we'd win.

It’s more aimed at the ‘John 'DvB' Useless is shit’ brigade that come out in force after a defeat. Looks like he might not be so far out of his depth after all. I think everyone knows our strikers are bang average.

We're more fickle than we like to admit. At least on here.

Or perhaps we just can't hold our drink.

is it?

Southampton stay up if you use xpts (taken from xg), and the teams that are relegated are Bournemouth wolves and forest

The top stays near the same

Blackburn are 9 positions away from there xpts. It nailed us but 9 positions off is far too wrong to offer any value

As with all stats, you can’t use them in isolation. They give you some pointers towards what is going right or wrong though.

Generally with xg, it shows you how a team is playing and how clinical they are with their chances. As you say, the teams at the top usually finish roughly where xg says they will. That’s because they create a lot of chances, they have good strikers and they play in an effective way.

For the teams at the bottom, there is more variation because they have more problems with their squad or tactics. Some create lots of chances but have Hogans up front so they don’t capitalise. Others have proper strikers but they don’t create enough chances. Some don’t create enough and can’t finish either…

If you have a low xg figure or you have a big variation between xg and goals scored, it hints at a problem. For us, we didn’t create enough previously but we’re better at that this year. We still don’t have anyone to finish off our decent chances though and the xg stats largely back all of that up.

I’m surprised by the stat. Does this modern day witchcraft measure how clear cut the chances are?

I ask because I sit there thinking for all our our new found thrust and intent, we rarely look like scoring. Not because Hogan is shit but because clear cut chances come along so rarely. Might be wrong though.

It also shows apparently how well JE has set the team up with the exception of his severe Hogan blindness, which will be his nemesis if he keeps doing it.

On another thread it was said that we were eighth for shots on goal but only five teams had scored fewer. That surely disproves this. Chances and shots do come along but we just don’t take them. We rarely look like scoring because …….l’m not going to repeat myself again.

It measures shots only.

I think it was something like over 10,000 shots were analysed and assigned a statistical likelihood of a shot type from that distance going in.

It doesn't take into account that a team may have peppered the box with crosses and got in good positions that didn't end in an attempt at goal.

It’s also early in the season so things like missing a penalty are going to effect the overall figure by quite a bit.

we’ve missed a pen, and at Watford and at home to QPR Hogan missed 3 chances with unapposed strikes from a combined distance of less than 25 yards. The xg for the pen and those 3 chances combined is probably close to 2.5. It’s no wonder we’re underperforming on them

No one genuinely thinks JE isn't good enough. There are some who think he isn't a big enough name, and some with an axe to grind.
