His career never recovered. Bizarre how he could be so good and then so mediocre.

6/7 was a weird season.

Didn't start great and the fans were absolutely livid after the home defeat by Norwich. There was a lot of talk of Bruce getting sacked off.

After Clemence's winner at Derby we went on a mad run and scored loads of goals over the Christmas period.

After Christmas was patchy. The pitch had to be relayed twice and we were winning ugly.

We did lose quite a few games that season - but we won a lot. effed up the title but it was alright in the end.

The McLeish promotion season on the other hand, was excruciating.

Wasn't he on the pop a bit too much?

Also I think we altered the team shape to ft Vine in and it no longer suited McSheffrey.
Plus we had some games called off in January and he'd put on weight over that period.

It seems we drew with Luton at home, not lost to them.
We didn't score more than 1 goal in a game in Jan, Feb or March 2007 which was odd as we'd been free scoring before Xmas.

There were two bad periods
The start of the season wasn't great. We went to Derby with the expectation Bruce would be sacked if we lost.
We just about won. That turned everything around and we won 13/15 and were top by a mile.

But after Christmas we lost at home to Luton and signed Rowan Vine from them.
I don't think he was awful, but it didn't work out with him.
There was a long run of not scoring more than 1 goal in a game.

We could have more or less sealed it at Easter by beating Barnsley and Burnley but lost both games.
We won away at Leicester and W*lv*s (A magnificent 2-3), then beat Sheffield Wednesday with 10 layers to leave us on the verge.
Derby lost on the Sunday to see us up.

Highlights
Winning loads in Autumn
0-4 at Southend
McSheffrey up to December
Doyle saving the 95th minute penalty at Molineux to seeal the 3-2 win
Seb''s goal v Sheffield Wednesday

Low points
The first ten games
Paul Robinson breaking DJ's jaw.
The run after Xmas
Two losses with big crowds at Easter
Not winning the title.

It was a much better season than 2008-09 which was a grindfest of 1-0s where we smothered games.

The Burnley 0-1 home defeat was a proper mugging if I remember correctly. A poor back pass from Tiny Taylor, with Burnley scoring with their only shot on target in about the 85th minute.

Luton was worse I think.
They had the ball for about 30 seconds during the game.
Vine scored twice and they sold him to us on the basis of that.

So not only did we drop points we bought a not good enough player because he played well against us.

They mugged us off at Kenilworth Road as well.

He was brought straight back in after his 3 game ban, even thought we'd just beat Cov 3-0 at home. I think DJ was dropped after scoring 2 and then we lost 2 'bankers' 1-0 back-to-back. It done our season really. Unless there were injuries, McSheff should have been made to wait for his chance.

As ever, some of the above may not be factually correct.

Sheff Weds away was the highlight of that season for me. McSheff was brilliant and although I think we were only 1-up at half-time, the game already looked over.

The other highlight of that season was the Specials gig after Preston at home last day, should've been a perfect weekend but some horrible little villa sort messed it up.

Ha, yeah. I was at that Specials gig.

It was an unreal experience.

...shame about the match...

High point of the season was the 5-1 win at Newcastle.

Preston on the last day was away.
I signed up as a member at Preston in case we needed points on the last day.
I was living in London and wasn't going to go and the tickets sold out.
Then we messed up a bit.
As we went up anyway I did not go to Preston, but I still get emails from them occasionally.
Also from Forest Green Rovers for some reason. I went to a friendly there about 10 years ago and since then they email me.

I watched that on TV.

The W*lv*s game at Molineux was pretty good. 2-3 with a 95th minute penalty save from Doyle to almost seal promotion.
Wasn't there some ridiculous chant to Ring of Fire? Possibly just belting the tune.

I'm getting my last day Prestons mixed up then.

I am rubbish at remembering stuff though.

We had Preston 2nd last game of the 08/09 season at St Andrews and lost 2-1 which meant we had to go to Reading on the last day and win. PNE scored a couple of absolute belters that day.

Yeah and regarding that Preston game of 08/09 one of them was that DVB ST Ledger who ended up dating Taylor Swift very weird crossover!

Regarding 06/07 if I recall Derby went up beating Baggies in Playoffs then went down with us the following season with the record low points tally in the Prem.

Fahey scored a header to put us one up, I remember the atmosphere being brilliant. Then Preston scored twice in the last few minutes (I think). Was sure after that we weren’t going up.

Lee Bowyer was sent off for fighting Lee Williamson in the middle of the pitch and Preston scored twice after that. Led to a memorable away day at Reading though!
