Deregulation would be terrible for a league-based sport. FFP isn’t great but a free-for-all would be far worse.

We had a free for all for nearly 150 years and it worked alright enough.

Not really. There was gate sharing from 1888 to the 1980s. And a maximum wage from 1900 to 1961. And restrictions on drawings until 1983. Perhaps not coincidentally those were the most competitive years in league history.

A free for all sounds great when you’ve got money but when things go tits up there is absolutely no safety net.

Without the FFP embargo I dread to think how much worse trouble the ineptitude of people like Dong could have got the club into - and there would be no recourse to blame anyone but our own greed for it.

I agree the current rules aren’t good enough but there has to be a better way

In fact, the history of the game is the opposite of a ‘free for all’ 😁

Clubs regularly paid players way above the maximum wage (via other means), and shared gates are irrelevant. Clubs still paid what they wanted for players, and benefactors/business people could invest whatever they liked.

Fact. The sport was better when it was a “free for all”.

FFP didn’t do a thing to protect us from Dong and BSHL. We had no safety net from how badly they ran us into the ground.

Deregulate the lot.
