The original Bell was a fantastic building - so it was knocked down for a horrible new build.

I hope this government can do more to help pubs. Obviously there are strong trends meaning there is going to be a decline but there must be some areas where policy can help to make them viable for people running them. They’re a unique feature of our culture.

And also the maypole, the gladiator, the warstock, the duke of York (harborne), the mountaineer, the bagnall arms

I think you can add the Prince of Wales to that list.

Awful pub, even over fifteen years or so ago that place was on its arse.

The Trees A38 Bristol Road, Edgbaston, used to get served at 16 which was useful.

Th Prince was a rare old place, witnessed two old boys having a full on punch up in the carpark over a Leek growing competition.
The old folk in there were worse than the youth. πŸ˜‚

Grew up opposite the Monica. It was a very busy pub in war time days. They used to organise trips to Blues away games,I remember, as a lad, crates of beer being loaded into the boot of the charabanc. Not many people would now remember, but a German bomb landed on the forecourt during the blitz, leaving quite a large crater. The blast blew my parents and me across our Anderson shelter. The Assembly Room was very lively at week-ends.
As a matter of interest, Don Dorman lived a short way up Monica Road, he and my brother were best mates.
Many good memories. Last tine I went past it was, I think, a Muslim community centre, but that was some years ago.

The Prince of Wales was my great grandad's local, he was in there so often that his funeral procession stopped outside the pub - and to be fair, a few hardened pissheads came out and raised a glass to him.

yeah the old fellas were the ones you had to watch out for. they'd been having fights in there for decades! my mate once got offered out by a bloke in his 60s, we were in our early 20s at the time.
i played them at football back in the very early 90s and they were effing rough!! our captain was a copper from CID in handsworth and he had to threaten to nick a couple of their players during the match to calm them down a bit. πŸ˜‚

It's Swell at the Bell is a line I have always remembered.
