I agree, it's not logical. The public will suffer.

And of course I say this as train driver who got to early retirement based on this very good money.

Which does seem a tad hypocritical mate, sorry.
And you could pay drivers £100 per day every day and it would have no or very little impact on fares, let’s not pretend otherwise. Again it’s the blue collar jobs that cause angst. Never a mention of what management would earn for earning by working a day off. And if they did how would customers benefit?
And btw the fares system needs sorting out. It’s ridiculous how cheap/expensive some tickets are
