Now that the season is over I am looking forward to a few days out golfing. It seems, like everything, to have got very expensive.

Any recommendations for a day out. An hour drive from Brum at the most.

How much are you looking to pay?
Weekday or weekend?

Use Golfnow to find the best deals. Assume you probably mean weekend so green fees always higher. Cheaper the later you play in the day.

Wharton park just past Bewdley is a great course. Great views, some hills to keep you fit.

Wharton is great and was reasonably priced the last time I played it. I'm not sure now.

£35 for an average course. £50 for something above par

It still is or I wouldn't have played it. Try to find a deal where I can.

To the OP, £35 should give you a few good options. Mostly tee times after midday though due to most clubs leaving the mornings to members.

Just checked it, very reasonable when compared to my local courses.

Handsworth, Sandwell, Kilworth Springs, Hellidon Lakes, Bromsgrove & Wharton...I didn't delve into the tee times but all on Golf Now for under £40.

Myself, I'd check all corners of my wallet for an extra 20 quid and get to Hawkstone, near Shrewsbury at some time. 1hr + 20 mins drive.
...get the Golf Now app, put the distance you want to travel and bingo!

This time of year is the best for playing later in the day and there's decent courses to play, with some good bargains to be had.

North Birmingham I'd recommend:

- Wishaw
- Aston Wood
- Atherstone- this is ace, a proper challenge and very different
- Lichfield GC

You can get on the Derby at the Belfry pretty cheaply at short notice.

I'm a fan of Wishaw, it's quiet and is a nice course but doesn't get much praise as it's round the corner from The Belfry and Drayton Manor.

Lichfield was priced fairly when it was called Seedy Mill but it's overpriced now, for what it is. Nice facilities though, it would be quite easy to sit sipping on the patio for an afternoon and some more.

I've never played Atherstone but I've been told a few times that I should.

Membership prices have gone thought the roof especially north Birmingham. Almost 2k a year now.

Enville is a great course if you can get over to it. Not sure on the green fee. Probably pretty pricey but well worth it. Also Whittington is worth it but again no doubt expensive.

£2k? Surely that's the better, private courses? I think there's plenty of choice at around £1,300. A few clubs do credit based flexi memberships, which are really useful if you don't play every week.

I am a member of the Forest of Arden, so when i am visiting UK you would be welcome to join as a members guest - £35 for weekdays, £45 for weekend for the Arden course.

I am over from 13th May - 23rd May, and again first three weeks of July.
