It seemed the most likely reason why two Blues players would both launch assaults on the same player who hadn't been involved in a bad challenge.
Neither Furlong nor Marsden were players I would associate with doing something like that without provocation. It was out of character for both.
We are talking about back in the 1990s. It is not like there weren't any players with racist views.
They were walking up the pitch, words were exchanged, then Furlong punched the Reading player. It was obviously for something that was said.
I suppose it might have been a personal insult.
Also Marsden deliberately elbowed the same player a couple of minutes later so he obviously thought was was said was unacceptable.
I don't remember either ever giving an explanation.

Furlong was sent off for Watford against us a few years before for a random punch at a corner. The game when Danny Wallace scored the winner for us.

I was in a box in the Railway via work that day. The wolves fans in front of us were an absolute delight. The Blues staff kept coming into the box to ask if we were ok. We obviously didn’t rile them 😗
I still chuckle as I remember hearing one of the Blues staff shout to a colleague in the corridor outside ‘You should see what they’ve done up Box 2’s window’. I never did find out.
