I think these days there is some sort of agreed severance written into the contract - I think the days of getting the entirety of your contract paid up are gone in most cases.

He'll get a nice pay off but I doubt he'll get 3 yrs money. Also when they do pay your contract they just pay it each month - you don't get the lump in one go and it stops if you get a new role. If a manager wants to stay in the game he can't sit it out for 3 years collecting his money and then expect to jump back in to top division management.
