Him and Mido were both signing. I was proper excited at the time. Both fell over within a couple of days of each other.

Or, most crazy of all, Ronnie Ekelund literally doing a lap of honour during a home game to announce his signing and then disappearing after and ghosting everybody at the club.

Narrator: “he never signed for Birmingham”.

Yes, I remember at the time being really confused what had gone on - at least now with the internet you do have some idea fairly quickly. Rather than wondering why we had a new signing parade around the pitch then a week later the local paper tells you what happened.

Even got as far as picking his next game.

We were all set to sign that Rene Krhin, he had agreed everything, we invited him to our cup game against Newcastle, the ground was half empty and then put him in the Main Stand, I feel like that was a mistake..

Looking at his career since, it might have been accidental genius.

Hossam Ghaly?

Yep ... had a massive row with Bruce at the training ground

"In July 2007, he was set to move to Birmingham City for a fee of £3 million (subject to work permit approval). However, on 3 August, Birmingham announced they would not be completing the deal after a training ground disagreement with manager Steve Bruce."

was always a weird signing in the first place 'cos he'd had a massive row at Spurs too and threw his shirt off

"His future at Tottenham was left in doubt after he pulled off his shirt and threw it to the ground after being substituted during a Premier League match against Blackburn on 10 May 2007. Ghaly had been brought on in the first half after an injury to Steed Malbranque, and rebelled when brought off. The Tottenham fans were left angry at Ghaly's reaction, singing "You're not fit to wear the shirt" and he was disciplined by the club soon after.[7] He issued the following apology: "I am just so angry with myself," Ghaly told the official Spurs site. "I have always considered it an honour to wear the Tottenham shirt and I never intended to show any disrespect".

"I knew things weren't happening for me out there, my play was terrible and I could hear the crowd jeering me. I was so upset at the fans' reaction. I have enjoyed playing in front of the club's supporters all season and I felt I had given of my best all the time and played some decent football. It is always hard to accept being substituted after such a short period of time and I was upset and taken aback by the cheering. I am a player who plays with my heart".

"I know my reaction was totally wrong. I have apologised to the manager and I also want to apologise to the fans. I hope they don't judge me on this incident alone. I have tried hard for the club this season".[citation needed

Nonetheless, he was not to play for the club again.

Speaking of transfers, have you seen that movie Air? about Nike signing Michael Jordan? I liked that film and I imagine some of the tricks the agent pulls are what happens in football here, too!

"Adidas are interested too - they've matched your offer"!
They hadn't.

Give it a go on amazon prime, worth a watch.

That game was peak Baz. From memory we’d played Derby mid week. I was away at college but managed to go to both games that week. On the Sunday, despite having gone to the previous game, I realised I had no idea who 3 of our players were (pre internet and no evening mail where I lived).

It was genuinely hard to keep track of comings and goings under Fry.

Ceefax/Teletext was also a friend outside of local radio sports bulletin hours.. I’m sure I first saw we’d signed Martin Grainger and John Cornforth on the same evening at about 10pm.

Danny Hill I don't remember at all, David Preece I do... just not as someone who played for us.
Exciting times!

Not Blues-related but I'm aware of a League 1 player whose contract expired at the end of last season.
After a couple of offers, he agreed to sign for another L1 club and was at the ground for the photoshoot & unveiling

News came through that his agent insisted on changing the terms to benefit himself.
Club called off the offer
He's now plying his trade with another club, neither of which are performing at the same level as his previous club.

Sometimes it's nowt to do with the buying club
