My niece, who is an assistant manager at a travel agents, had already pre booked today off. However, this morning, when only her manager had made it in (after walking an hour to get there), she attempted to get her car off the drive but couldn’t. She offered to walk but her manager told her not to. In the meantime, a staff member in her 60s also walked in. Several young members of staff who live close by, couldn’t get in 🙄
You made one mistake
You got burned at the stake
You're finished, you're foolish, you failed

If the manager's telling people not to go in, why are people going in?

And I'm sure the 60-year-old employee will be given a medal and generous pay rise for her remarkable service in these difficult conditions. Right?

The only people they're mugging off is themselves. They'd be moaning if they slipped and broke a bone or lost control of their car and wrote it off.

It’s not the 70s anymore. You can’t bully people into coming into work when they don’t feel it’s safe to n

I can assure you schools used to close in the 60’s and 70’s, before even these Amundsen type folks were diligent pupils, when it snowed a bit. I know because my mom made us walk and we were only allowed into the hall at school with the handful who turned up who were looked after by an odd teacher who came in. Didn’t mind that much, we were allowed out for snowballs.

Maybe the decline set him because of them.
The nation’s mood became less intrepid and they did nothing. Complicity is responsibility.

One thing I do notice is the media become almost hysterical about these events. Imagine if we had typhoons and the like. I guess there’s a lot of empty space to fill in the bit called ‘media’ that didn’t exist to the same extent.

Your wife sounds like a bit of a bastard - whatever happened to "schools closed - go sledging - go play in the snow - build yourselves a snowman" ?

😜😜😜

Tbf all shipping forecast areas were at a 12 yesterday, the highest level. Don't ever remember that happening. Wind speeds of 110mph+ recorded in Cornwall, very much typhoon strength.

That's the thing, really - this is, in UK terms, a pretty extreme weather event, which makes it newsworthy. If we had forty days like this every year, it wouldn't be news.
