They had 3 shots on target all game, apart from a calamitous 20 minute spell in the first half, we were the better team. what's he expected to do with that defending?

Let's look at the data.

We had 11 shots to their 10 - 7 on target to their 3 - but our xG was 0.61 to their 1.07. They also had more touches in our box 25 - 18. Crucially we had 0 one-on-one s to their significant 1. 6 of our attempts came from outside the box compared to their 2.

Where we had dominance was in possession - 60% - and passing. We played a total of 462 passes to their 311, with a pass accuracy of 75.5% to their 69.8%. We also played more forward passes 175 - 135 and more successful final third passes 87 - 61.

Defensively is, unsurprisingly, where we fell apart winning only 20% of our tackles to their 66.7%. We also made less tackles 10 - 15, and less clearances 20 -32.

That last stat is unsurprising given how we play, but overall I think the picture speaks to an ongoing issue in our perception of quality. If we value possession and control of the ball as the key metric, we were clearly the better side. But if clearer goalscoring chances and superior defending is the metric, then clearly they were the better side.

Currently our goal difference is 0 - 46 for and 46 against. There are only 10 teams that have scored fewer and 10 that have conceded the same or more. So statiscally we are pretty much where we deserve to be.

The dominance of possession isn't a dominance. It's just how we play, passing the ball more than the opposition.
Possession and passing are exactly the same data. All they did was press us extremely well, it worked, creating two chances first half, game over.

I don't think I want us to spend more money on players for Davies. His time is up for me. As some on else mentioned, let's go for a manager who has experience getting promotion to the prem

I wouldn't really expect anything else.

1. Because he couldn't see what the problem was in game.
2. If he had then he couldn't fix it.

For me, they pressed in waves, and had more energy for it and we couldn't play out from the back. They rightly targeted BOS knowing he'll either be MIA or forced to defend properly. Decent plan. Plan b was going long, and we were incapable of winning seconds let alone anything else.

They were fitter, better, more confident.

Sometimes you gotta take one. Or two. Stick together and move on.

If you've watched us this season, you couldn't fail to note that our right side has been a weak point, and many a LW or LWB has had acres of space down our right... there manager played a back five and utilised wingbacks to get in behind BOS. It worked on multiple occasions.
Whenever a team has agressively pressed us we have tended to struggle. Other than Paik I struggle to think of another player that has a good enough touch to receive the ball under intense pressure.

Don’t want to defend Davies but we started both halves well, the poorly defended goals cost us, not sure the manager can stop players having brain farts in the big moments

That said our set up was totally wrong for their press, such a disappointing night

Paik also helps a lot when we're trying to play out, Doyle hid in the first half once the going got tough

Yep, Doyle was happy to watch Iwata go and show knowing he struggles to pass the ball first time when he’s warming up let alone with players up his arse

Doyle has been off it for a while now but you cant blame him too much when he got benched at every opportunity earlier on in the season an he knows his future isnt with us anymore.

Of course you can, that's fair. There was a few players who went into hiding last night after the opening goal. There's still major mentality issues when it comes to the squad we have.

Doyle has been a huge dissapointment. He will be on big wages and we probably paid a loan fee as well. Be good to send him back in June.

We saw it once in the first half where Doyle got the ball from Beadle, hit it first time to Klarer and we were past their first line. And then he didn’t show for it again, leaving Iwata to try to do it but he just can’t play that first time pass to the opposite CB. So we kept getting squeezed and having to do the “we’ve run out of ideas” sequence of CB -> LB -> LW -> (lose ball).
