I have my Dad's cherry Dr Martens still somewhere.
Purchased in 1969 in Brum.

He told me the first skins he spotted were when we were playing Chelsea.
Like the place or not fashions have pretty much always spread from London.

Looking here it would have been March '68 in the cup.

Sta Prest? Oxford shoes/ox blood colour, bottle green jackets, crew neck jumpers. The ‘townie’ look was always rather less threatening than the skins. Must have been about 1969 I guess.

Monkey boots were for people who couldn’t afford Dr Martens, weren’t they?

Anyway Blakeys or Segs?

Sta-Prest (or Sta-Press) wrinkle-resistant - introduced by Levi's in 1964.

Segs, in my Monkey boots. Would have loved Docs but Mom and Dad couldn't afford em, so I got Monkey boots for Christmas.
By the time I was working I'd lost interest as I'd become a greaser 😃

Thought the casual scene came down from the NW, Liverpool in the main.

80's casual scene was certainly pushed by Liverpool pushed that due to them playing all over europe, their fans would (sometimes nicked from shops) but come home with tons of Italian and other cutting edge at the time clothes. Though the London club fans have always dressed well.

Skinheads were first seen 67/68 before becoming a real subculture in '69 once Mod pretty much died out.
Mod fractured into either flower power hippy or skinhead, smart boots, braces, Levis.

I don't want to promote fake gear BUT ... a good friend bought a pair of £180.00 Dr Martens from DH Gate a few weeks ago for £25.00.
They appear incredible quality, he has said they're comfortable and wear well apparently.

Obviously the moral issue of child labor, counterfeit goods, avoiding UK tax etc but to weigh that against a £155.00 price difference.

real DM's are absolute shite nowadays, since private equity about a decade ago. they quietly dropped the 'pair for life' promise too, as they really are shite.
