Hi guys, I'll be back in the UK, and Birmingham for the first time in a few years in May. Ive seen a lot of my old haunts have either shut or are closing down.

Any recommendations for a proper Balti, pint of real ale, craft beer, any decent wine bars, and any restaurants you'd recommend. I'm on a bit of a shoestring considering I earn in pesos these days so I'm not looking for Michelin or fine dining.

I used to like tilt, post office vaults etc

Thanks in advance!

Brums not a decent place to go out anymore mate. More and more people avoiding it.

Pubs are sh*t and expensive, can't get a decent curry anywhere. Last one I remember being decent was Shabab's so could try there.

I'd go to Manchester\London.

If you're on a peso budget it's the 'spoons.👍

As somebody who is known as first and last up to the bar.The city centre is very expensive nowadays for a good tot with food.

For city centre post-beer Balti, I tend to use the Taj Mahal. It's not the best, it's not the worst.

For a proper balti, you're still best off somewhere like Shabab's. If you want a drink in the centre and then to stay somewhere nearby to eat, I think the Indian Streatery on Bennett's Hill is a bit of a hidden gem at a reasonable price.

The Colmore is also a good shout if you like beer and pizza and can afford current middle of town prices (~£6 for a beer). Wide cask and keg selection there, and 'The Brummie' is the pick of the pizzas.

Taj Mahal back of new street station is decent. Drink around colmore row, old contemptibles, the royal, roebuck, joint stock. Baccus bar is closer to taj Mahal but not cheap but no where is in town.

Or viceroy in jewellery quarter, plenty of pubs around there.

If you want cheap it's Hennessys followed by manzils. Cheap and cheerful

Go to Stirchley, have food at Eat Vietnam (book in advance) and then head to Attic brewery/taproom around the corner for great craft beers. If you've got more than 3-4 hours, there's plenty of other places for drinks in that area (Glasshouse tap room also worth a visit, and other decent bars on the Pershore Rd).

Head to the Merry Maid in Balsall Heath for a cheap and tasty Mixed Grill, something relatively new (popping up everywhere) and a MUST DO whilst back, in a spit n sawdust / community club type environment

Agree about eat Vietnam and the attic in stirchley. Couch has some of the best cocktails you will find, is a bit pricey though but they know their stuff. And have amazing ice cubes.

In the center eat at boneyard. And start and finish at the spoons in new street. I love it. The wide spread of civilisation you see there is amazing!

People starting their night, finishing their night, illicit hook ups, stags, hens, old dears, it has it all.
Bad dreams are only dreams.

Yeah i'm avoiding the city centre at all costs. Staying with my family in Sutton, but wanna get to south of the city centre. My dad lives in the JQ so will be spending some time around there too. In bringing my partner with me so wanna show her some nice places! (And not spoons hahahaha)

Are there any decent places around kings heath these days?

I like the Colmore the place is smart , the Pizza is great , they serve good wine /beer and the staff are friendly .

However a lot of their beer is North of 6 quid .I was in there last week a pint of Imperial stout & a large glass of Rose £21 .
