People are gonna keep mentioning Ashworth because he's the most high profile name. Realistically most people can't name many Director of Football types.

But I just don't see it. He's been at Man United, now he's probably got what is a dream job at the FA. Got a £4m quid payoff from United too so isn't wanting for money.

What is the attraction to go to from that to Blues? You can talk of the project or whatever, but he probably felt like he had that at Newcastle with them being bought by people even richer than Knighthead, and still he left that.

If KH are looking to hire world class, he is. World class costs serious money, they need to pay the rate.

Although they were happy with Dale, who I’m not convinced is ‘world class’.

Which potentially blows a big hole in our FFP/SCR or whatever it is going to be. We can't go spending multi millions without the revenue to cover it.

Dale is light weight IMO and any promotion to the PL will see him exposed around the big boys table of PL execs.

FWIW i don’t think you get world class anything in the championship, it costs too much and we will have to evolve as the club progresses in a similar way people wouldn’t expect us to sign Olise this summer we shouldn’t expect us to sign the equivalent for the DoF role.

I'll keep saying it - it's as important that whoever gets the DoF role can mesh well with Wagner, Knighthead and the coaching staff etc as their competency is - cos if can't get on with people at Blues they're not going to last long.

Right now I'll take competent if they fit in seamlessly.

It's a myth that Spooner gave debuts to loads of kids for money at the end of that season.

Reid made his debut against Swansea and Burke against Stoke. The only other debut was Fernandez on the last game of the season against Derby and he's one of the Cornella signings.

Absolutely no one. They seem to be able to attract corporate and finance people who have worked at top 6 clubs.

But not on the football side. Why? Well it seems you need to be in bed with KH for starters and not disagree with their ethos. I’m not sure we will progress yes men.

Nope, you misunderstand me.

Take Dan Ashworth, who apparently it's God's gift to DoF-dom according to some on here. He somewhat failed ata Newcastle and definitely did at Man U; both times I believe because he didn't mesh with the ownership at the respective clubs.

He's not the only DoF who has done well at one place and failed at another - and it's because it doesn't just require competency but also the right interpersonal relationships.

I suggest (and I'll not be reading the replies to this for obvious reasons cos I know what 90% of them will say) Gareth Southgate.

He ticks all the competency / experience boxes.

He's also a very big name which helps with the narrative / PR we want to project.

Shame that we effectively can't even speak to him on account if him being a DVB.

Not true. Execs above head coach are not counted as part of the squad cost so, theoretically, the club could spend whatever it wanted on those roles
