I don’t. You have to take into account it was far more competitive to qualify than it is now.

England always have good players. We don’t always get the best, or the best results, out of them. Maybe it’s to do with expectation but I think justt aboutevery other international team that has been as highly ranked as consistently as England have managed to win something.

We won the World Cup.

Sweden two points from 6 qualifying games but have still managed to find themselves in the tournament . You'd have to be seriously shit to fail to qualify in the modern era.

But you do have to contend with playing people who are fit, can run, are sober and haven’t just finished a fry up and 10 Woodbine. The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s was full of players who were shit with the odd exceptional player and manager/coach. Eff me one mad bastard in the 78 World Cup ran from the defensive wall and booted the ball into Peru, because the ref blew the whistle for the free kick to be taken.
The standard now is way higher. Even though they’re all robots

I thought he did that in protest rather than because he didn't understand the laws of the game though. Could be wrong.

Pretty sure you're thinking of Zaire at the 1974 World Cup in Germany, which would make getting the ball into Peru extra special. I don't think anyone including the player himself knows why he did it.

Yeah, I saw an interview with him years ago and as best I can remember, it was done in protest and an attempt to get himself sent off as he reckoned the manager had accepted a bribe to throw the game.

Now you mention it, that does ring a bell. However, the idea of bribing the manager to fix Zaire to lose against Brazil sounds a bit far fetched to me.

I meant in that period from the 70’s onwards. Besides we didn’t have to qualify and were pretty rubbish at ‘away’ tournaments around then. Helped a lot having homer officials in 66 win too.
