he was rated 16th in the league last season in terms of save %

[fbref.com]

and previous season at sheff wed he was rock bottom

[fbref.com]

he has improved as a keeper but it is enough for us to challenge for a play off spot this season

Like i said statistically a lower half keeper. Thanks for the actual stats.

He is having said all the this, the best all round keeper available to us and giving him shit on an actual match day in the ground like many fans do is counter productive and stupid.

How do you "amortise" wages? Surely wages are paid over the length of the contract anyway, you can only amortise the transfer fee across the contract?

A 4-year deal from Brighton, well though of in the England set-up and clearly considered to be a good goalkeeper by our manager and goalkeeping coach. I'm going to suggest he's probably a good goalkeeper who's only getting better.

He’s going into his 3rd full season in the Championship. He needs to do some maturing and develop (which is fine!). But we can’t wear rose tinted glasses of him being a promising rookie because he’s not that. He needs to be assessed for what he’s proven with Championship experience to date.

He’s not well thought of in the England setup - that’s complete make believe. Look at England U21 keepers in the last 10 years and judge for yourself how many have become prem keepers let alone full internationals.

We do have evidence of that actually. Pimo was on here not long ago talking about how Beadle is thought of in the England setup from a camp Alfie Smith attended as another promising English goalkeeper.

I think a key thing here is consistency. For the amount of budget CD was willing to allocate to a goalkeeper, Beadle as a consistent presence following last season and with his abilities (whether or not you agree with them) was considered the best decision.
I don't think it's a bad decision. I'd rather this than spend £14m on Vitek who might need replacing if promoted to the premier league

And he did markedly improve through the season, as he clearly worked to improve.
Which ties into what Pimo said about how dedicated and hard working he is.

Presumably part of the attraction is that the club already knows things like that about him, rather than spending a big chunk of the budget on a different keeper and finding he's got an attitude problem, or just doesn't fit in well.

Chris Davies outlines why James Beadle is ‘the right keeper’ for Birmingham City

James Beadle is heading into his second season at Birmingham City as the undisputed number one in the eyes of Chris Davies.

When Blues first signed Beadle on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion last year, Davies billed it as a battle between two number ones and warned the England under-21 international that he would start the season as second fiddle to Ryan Allsop.

Beadle usurped Allsop within 11 games of last season’s Championship and there is little doubt over who will keep goal when Blues open their league season at Sheffield United a week Saturday.

For the first time during his tenure as manager Davies has handed out the number one shirt to one of his goalkeepers with Beadle becoming the first man since Neil Etheridge to hold that number.

It is another show of faith by Davies in 22-year-old Beadle who penned a new long-term contract at Brighton before joining Blues on loan.

Davies said: “I said to James in the summer that one of the reasons I want him back here is because I believe in him a lot and he’s mentally strong. He proved that last year.

“As a goalkeeper, it’s not about not making mistakes because even the very best make mistakes in that position. If you’re mentally strong then it gives you a great chance.

“He’s got great raw qualities as a goalkeeper, but having that mental strength, to be a really good goalkeeper, it’s a must. He coped with the ups and downs last year very well. I could see it day-to-day in how he was and he was rock solid. It didn’t mean that everything was smooth but he handled it really well and showed a strength of character.

“That was one of the main reasons why I wanted to bring him back.

“He’s not our player, he’s obviously Brighton’s player and they’ve given him a new contract and believe in him a lot. We believe in him and are developing him and pushing him along, but he has got quality.

“The fans singing his name know what he’s capable of and I think James is the right keeper for us.”

Beadle is poor.

Improving yes but he will get Davies sacked and lose us points.

His mistake against Barca shows how bad he has been.

As a ST holder I have zero confidence in him

We got better in the last 6 games when the team decided not to pass to Beadle as they had zero trust in him. All he did was boot it mostly aimlessly forward.

I understand the rationale in signing him but I don’t agree with it… and last season stats back that up

Look up the mistake Vitek made for Bristol City at Stoke last season, he's going for £14m.

All keepers make mistakes, if you are judging him on an error in a pre season friendly (whilst ignoring the double save and penalty saves) I think you'd struggle to identify a keeper you do rate that is atainable.

Beadle is top class already. He will make mistakes as all goalies do. All players do. In years to come we will look back and consider ourselves privileged
Is he eff.

People honestly don't realise how highly rated Beads is in the game. Internationally and the big clubs all think he will be top top.

Does that mean he is top top now? No. Because he is learning. But from someone who has seen him up close around other pros, trust me, he has the ability to be a complete joke! His raw ability is unreal and put that with his frame - wow.

Put it this way, i think Beads is top and I wouldnt want us to sign him permanently as if he had 4 or 5 more years here he would most certainly prove to be a major block to Alf as Beads will just continue to get better.

I think he will finish the season with many of you saying - yeah, ok, he's top. Lets wait and see.

TBF, it would probably work well - I'd guess at that point we'd probably lose Beadle to one of the biggest clubs if he does keep developing as he did last season. Perfectly timed for you lad to step in?

Bagel's post about finding little value in the transfer market is ringing true.

Vitek will probably be a good keeper - but £14m for one season of Championship experience where his team finished 12th... Even Rushworth for £22m is a lot.

As CD said, we'd be better off investing in outfield positions.

Beadle was clearly unsuited to the play out from the back style we had for most of last season - he was uncomfortable, his team mates were uncomfortable and the crowd definitely were, but as a goalkeeper and a presence he clearly got better as the season went on. He started coming for crosses and wide free kicks and some of his saves were sensational - the double save at the end of the Barca games was ridiculous

I see 2 issues in his game. He spills the ball a lot - the Barca game being the latest example, and his kicking - even from dead balls - is really poor. The amount of times everyone is stood out wide for the goal kick and he boots it down the middle is ridiculous.

HOWEVER

For this season I think he’s the right choice - it allows our budget to be spent elsewhere, and we get a keeper with a lot of experience despite his young age
Replying to B47blues   16:28, Wed 5 Aug
He's decent at playing short passes out from the back imo but his longer distribution can be awful.

It’s a very underwhelming signing and not one that fits in with a promotion chasing championship side.

I’ll back him sure and he will improve being so young but he just doesn’t have the fundamentals of a good keeper apart from being admittedly a very good shotstopper.
I think what grinds me more is that we’re developing him for another sides benefit and I would be far more on board with this if there was an option to buy.
I just hope that we can benefit by using the money in other areas as CD says.

I thought his command of the area and how he dealt with high balls improved massively as the season went on last year. I think he'll have a really good season for us.

It really is a pointless topic now.

He is back, we are stuck with him for the whole season.

I feel it will be Davis' downfall.

I am not going to keep piping up whenever is drops a clanger or we look nervous trying to play football at the back.

I want him to prove me wrong but the stats are there to see.
