My issue with the 'the Jan players have bedded in' point is thats true of every team. The players already at the club are supposed to get better, and the additions are supposed to enhance and upgrade those players. Particularly when the league as a whole is stronger than it was last year.

The summer signings do that to a certain extent, so the window can't be called a complete disaster but Davies himself said we needed a couple of players on Friday, and the recruitment team have failed to give him them.

Personally, I think the squad quality between the end of the last season and now is broadly the same. But standing still is going backwards when everyone around you has improved, so im quite disappointed.

For me it’s about progress. I don’t expect us to immediately have the quality of that Southampton midfield tonight and chuck endless money at it, but improving and adding the quality slowly so it feels like progress towards something. This window has not represented progress for me and we’ve not caught up with the best teams. We played very well tonight and arguably had the better chances, however you could see they had what we miss through the middle.

Funny that because their fans were saying how poor they were in midfield. Solis was easily the best midfielder on show.

Load of cry babies on here, and a few getting the wums in.

I thought Iwata was far better than Solis tonight.

Why would we have "spunked" it in summer?

There is absolutely no doubt it is easier to buy and integrate players in the summer rather than January.

Wagner is significantly better than Cochrane, Osman is significantly better than Vicente. Therefore we are weaker.

Except we have added Millar, who is very similar to Osman.

Cochrane is looking improved on last season, and we have actual depth st LB while last season when Wagner was missing we had a CB there.

I thought Iwata played pretty well too. Just thought Solis broke up their play a lot more and got us moving forward. He’s quite a dynamic player.

Have Southampton improved from last season?

Lost key players Harwood-Bellis, Shea Charles and even Ross Stewart.

Brought in a dodgy looking keeper based on tonight, Schlotterbeck who struggled with Priske tonight, Lewis Dobbin and Ward-Prowse.

A window needs to be based on both ins and outs and the only player departed we wanted to keep is Wagner who has been replaced by Lund and Cochrane seems to be really thriving so far.

I don't think that many sides in the division can point to being outright clearly stronger than last season.

But he was also quite poor on the ball when given time. He’s going to be good in a team that concedes possession and can break it up and run from deep. Be strong as well as awkward.
Unsure that was what we needed tbh.

There is absolutely no doubt it is easier to buy and integrate players in the summer rather than January.

Because some people seem to be giving the impression that signing anybody would at any price would have been better than holding what we have.

We tried with Gelhardt and Osman, both are in the Premier league which shows the market we fished in.

In 4 months time if Osman or Gelhardt has made 0 starts then perhaps they are available again for us to have another try at or we identify other targets.

If I was to score the window I'd say 5/10

Think everyone is over reacting a little if I'm honest.

Over reacting, because the window was underwhelming ?
I’m not sure how much impact Millar and Bird will have on driving us forward, but they are the only attacking additions to a team that really lacked goals.

It seems that the club didn’t want to push the boat out for players who were down the list of targets. Significant funds were clearly there for Osman/Gelhardt, but not for those lower down.

If that’s the case, to me - that’s just sensible.

Think a lot of fans wanted to see that money chucked at other players, almost just for the sake of it - but got to be happy with us keeping our powder dry for now.

We go with what we’ve got, which on paper isn’t too bad at all. Ultimately, this isn’t our squad for the whole season as they’ll be opportunity for more ins/outs in January.

Do think we really need to address the DoF/SD role though.

Why do you equate not spending copious amounts of money with 'standing still'?

Developing a squad is another way of going forward.

I never mentioned money or some burning desire to spend copious amounts of it.

I dont think the squad has improved enough for us to bridge the gap between where we finished last season and where we want to finish this season. We dont have enough creators in central areas.

And it seems the club agrees with me, given we've tried and failed to sign exactly that type of player.
