Re: The test

FWIW I agree.

Stokes likes his favourites, but specifically for the Ashes we need a Dawson type.

Better with the bat, too.
There's too much opinion and not enough fact.

Agree.

Jadeja is a gun fielder, who is a similar batsmen to Stokes. He can hold up and end, is incredibly accurate, and when it turns - gets wickets (as his average in India shows).

Bashir is a passenger in the field and with the bat, and doesn't justify it with the ball. I know the stats - he gets wickets - but I just don't think he offers enough control with the ball when it doesn't spin.

The away Ashes series will make or break him. As an England fan, I hope he comes good, but I can see them attacking him hard and early on, just like they did with Leach

Quite. Jadeja is a good bowler, more than a good bowler (and its bowling we’re comparing). I admire a lot, he’s one of my favourite cricketers. On this wicket he’s done jack compared with Bashir and to say Bashir has done little previously is just wrong, particularly when he is a youngster starting out.

I’ve seen him quite a lot live and I like him, and in my view he has done a very decent job in these last two tests bowling on first and second day wickets. I’ve seen day one and two of both. He’s certainly saved the legs of the seamers. I trust the view of Stokes and McCullum.

Dawson is a good cricketer, a bit unlucky maybe to not have more of a chance.

No one would be happier than me to be proven massively wrong, he’s very young, if he’s hammered in the ashes it will be career over potentially, he’s not experienced enough in my view, appreciate Somerset have some good spinners but he’s not really had a look in for them for whatever reason

I do get the point on BMc and Stokes rating him, as I think they know a lot more about cricket than me, I just don’t see what they do in bashir, hope I’m massively wrong, to me you’re better off playing rehan Ahmed if youth is the preference, similar fc average

I really do think Dawson is the option I’d go with
21:43, Fri 4 Jul
Just think we disagree on him, and I do hope to be wrong

I hope at some point the ecb provide some help to spin in England. Pitches will never really suit the development of a brilliant one, swans probably the last we could say was a proper match winner
21:45, Fri 4 Jul
I’m not sure Rehan has got it. They’ve looked at him and thinker not, and as things stand, I tend to agree from what I’ve seen.

Dawson is a good cricketer as I think we agree but if anyone would be taken down, I think it’s more likely to be him despite his experience. I admire how Bashir has stood up and he’s bowled a huge number of overs.

We’ll see. I wouldn’t declare him an England great or anything just yet but I admire the guts he has shown and he’s bowled very, very few bad balls in these two games. Would love to see him on a wicket that helped him 😁

You're not playing Ahmed as your only spinner.

Not enough control.

I wouldn’t play either, Dawson for me is the option

It’s more the point I don’t think there’s a lot between Ahmed and bashir ability wise, I can’t remember the lads name at notts but he seems half decent too

I think all need a lot more games at fc level, swan was last 20s before he turned into a genie

It’s a shame we don’t seem to have many options at spin

The bashir story is remarkable really, didn’t stokes spot him on twitter
22:47, Fri 4 Jul
Well, leave it there. I think you underestimate Bashir but time will tell. I think it’s fair to say both of us wouldn’t mind if I was actually right in this discussion, we’ll see in due course.

The main problem is that we're not really producing good finger spinners these days. Neither are other nations, mind you, and a lot of the current test finger spinners are getting on a bit.

Bashir has bags of potential, and I'm convinced Stokes and McCullum will play him in the Ashes, but it might well set him back like it's done others in the past.

I just wish there were more options.

That’s my main concern the ashes. Of course he’s got potential but for me he’s not played nowhere near enough fc games, he’s very raw and learning his craft at test level where he’s going for lots of runs isn’t ideal in my mind. I don’t think as it stands he’s up to it, whether it’s form or what but he’s been very easy to play against, his wickets this series have been from slogs as opposed to world clsss deliveries

I massively hope to be wrong

We've done it to young spinners a lot over the last few years; Dom Bess, Borthwick, Kerrigan, Crane, Ansari, Tredwell, Ahmed and even Dawson to a certain extent.

There's loads of 'em.

Been too keen to fill the void of Swann,

The ECB need to find a way of developing good spinners and bringing them in when they are actually ready

Leach was probably a good example but he just never seemed to reach the heights needed

Tempted to go tomorrow.

See how it pans out today, obviously 🙄

Anything under 380 and we have chance but worried about tomorrows forecast, very grey
