62. Been in the papers a fair bit recently. Had his troubles.

From the Times the other day. Paywalled.

I read this last week and thought what a cracking batsman he was back in the day.
Loved pace bowling but spin was his nemasis and played in an England side that was average.

Hit the cut harder than anyone. Sounds like a sad end to his life. Sorry to read it about him.

Probably Gordon Greenidge nailed it harder...but Smith wouldn't have been far behind.

He was one of my favourite England batsmen. I read his book a while back and it was quite harrowing.

Awful news. His cut shot was what I will remember too.

One of my favourites from back in the day growing up alongside Dean Jones, both sadly gone.
RIP thanks for the memories.
Alive. Early starter. Enricher of lives

To be fair, no-one got much chance to drive against that West Indies attack in the 80s, so you had to have the cut and pull in your locker.

Great player.

He may be gone but the images of him cutting West Indies quick bowlers for four will live on forever

That amazing test at Edgbaston 1995 complete before lunch on the Saturday, he top scored in both innings. The only one with a game plan against fast bowling.
