One of Ron Saunders' biggest regrets .....after Halsall I think

Didn't rate Gayle much although his heart was immense , a Liverpool reject but in fairness , it actually wasn't a disgrace to be a Liverpool reject back in the 80's

There was a Vile left back (Gibson I think) who almost cut him in half at B6

Howard could be relied upon for some good Brum pub and club recommendations though ....preferred Alan Ainscow TBH

Howard Gayle's ability got me and Mrs G back in the day into a bit of grief at Goodison .
He scores for us to equalise 1-1 , and as we celebrate in their huge grandstand top tier , the Scouse hard cases threaten life and limb ... " Sit down you Brummie bastards " :D

Fekk 'em
A point up there was a decent result

Wow! I was thinking what an amazing picture, its a shame it's not from my time else it'd be made into a canvas or framed somewhere in the house!

I seem to remember some video footage of that goal but now I can not seem to find it. Is my old age catching up with me or can one of you wizards find it some where please.

Gayle scored some cracking goals and was a very good player. He also completely "Got It" when we were playing villa. I liked him a lot.

Him leaving was nothing to do with his ability, because he had loads of it. Plus he was ridiculously quick.

He was at Tom Ross night couple of months ago. During his spot he said us and Villa we're both too obsessed with each other and would never be successful until we got out of that cycle.....That went down a storm not!
Spoke to him afterwards about it, told him I disagreed & I thought he was comparing us as teams to Pool/Everton he did start to waiver a bit when I said that! Not every team can be successful all the time (or in both our cases most of the time)! So you have to have something that keeps the passion going.

Seemed OK as a bloke and at least he took time to listen.

He might say that now, but all I know is that when he played for us against villa he was like a man possessed and wanted to fight everything in a villa shirt.

He must have mellowed over the years...

Yeah was going to mention that. It was around Sept / Oct '83, beat a couple of players and smashed it into the top corner from 30 yards, Tilton Road End.

In between some real bad club dust ups with his drinking buddies - the ugliest bouncers would steer well clear of him Harford, Blake, Hopkins and Cotton.

Scored a great goal against Derby in the league cup the month before the Ipswich game and bagged the winner at the Albion that season. I don't recall seeing anyone quicker in the league that year. In full flight he was unstoppable. A really underrated player.
