Does contain lots of references to stats (including expected-goals (xG)) but this is a really good article using Raheem Sterling as an example about the difference between being a good technical finisher and actually scoring goals.

Sterling scores lots because they have quality midfielders who create the opportunities. If all of their midfielders ran about lots but couldn't pass, Sterling wouldn't have scored a goal yet.

Pat Nevin makes a very good analysis as to how and why Sterling is getting amongst the goals this season...

It does help the likes of Sterling that the rest of the team is so good that he doesn't need to think about getting back to defend.
