Penguin Era and all that.....spent 7 seasons in the top flight but struggled for the most part, quite a few relegation scraps finally going down in the forgettable campaign of 78/79 and of course the heartbreak of Fulham (now partially forgiven anyway) ….but what a great part of our history....we also reached a FA Cup semi final in 1972 losing to the then World Heavyweighters Leeds United....another Hillsborough disappointment yet we would return to that very same ground a couple of weeks later (won 2-1 v Sheff Wed with two goals from Trevor and set up that wonderful finale to go on and clinch promotion at Orient (they had dropped the 'Leyton' for a while) at the death

Sold Bob Latchford and TF for then British record fees

And literally gave Kenny Burns away to Forest for a laughable fee too

If you're looking at that montage , mate....that was Big Dave Latchford ….first joined us along with younger brother Bob in the late 60's.....Pendrey played in that youth team as well ….. I'm not 100 per cent sure but I think all three may have played in the FA Youth Cup Final of 1967 losing to Sunderland …..I believe that's the only time we have ever reached the Youth Cup Final ….I'm sure we have made the semis a few times

There was another Latchford brother ….Peter was also a goalkeeper who was signed by West Brom and spent 12 years at Celtic

Just from memory , the players in that are

Pendrey, Hopkins, Dave Latchford, Tony Van Mierlo (who was pants along with his Dutch buddy Brocken) ….looks like he is challenging for the ball with a Liverpool number 2 , maybe Neal , not sure , doesn't really look like Phil Neal

Dillon, Gallagher , Broadhurst and Gallagher again

Three of those pics are from the 70s! We had the round neck Adidas shirt in 1978-79 and for the first couple of months of the 1979-80 season. I distinctly remember us starting that promotion season wearing it, but when we beat Burnley 2-0 at home (Frank Worthington's first two goals for us) just before Christmas we were wearing the V neck. Can you imagine a club changing the shirt design mid-way through a season now?! Of course we did it in 1993 also when Brady got rid of the paint splodge kit, but they were special circumstances.

And that picture of Dave Latchford must be from the 1975-76 season I reckon.

Thought Hatton got one of the goals at Sheffield Wednesday. The equaliser I think

Always remember the plod separating supporters in the big open end, leaving to surround the pitch ten minutes before the end, and a spot of mayhem following. Different era.

Other thing about then was the team that stated the next season in the top flight was pretty much the same one. Nowadays half the team is replaced.

That game at Hillsboro ... chaos. Police horses on the terraces.

Do you remember the late rush of Blues onto the Kippax in 72-73
Mancs didn,t know what hit them :D
Also I think the same season was the pitch invasion at the Baseball ground and the fourth best average home attendance in the country !
Magic days .
13:23, Wed 13 Jun
Opening game of the season at Maine Rd? I was in the seats opposite having learned the hard way the season before. I was shocked to see the kippax was royal blue. And stayed that way for the whole match.

Baseball Ground was always a mickey take by Blues. Anyone remember the pratt in the yellow trousers? Had his very own edition of No Hiding Place after the match.

Yep. Brilliant times.

I think we all thought we were on the verge of finally becoming a top club ,then it all went wrong after the sale of Latchford.

Yes, you are quite right.....Hatton did score first, Trevor got the winner and was mobbed by Blues fans at the end

Always remember the plod separating supporters in the big open end, leaving to surround the pitch ten minutes before the end, and a spot of mayhem following. Different era.

me and a mate were attacked by Sheffield United fans on that terrace , there were fans of other Yorkshire clubs there including Leeds.....Leeds fans had taken a right hammering from Blues during the FA Cup semi final earlier that month when the Police made the ridiculous and daft decision to escort about 500 of them from their overcrowded Leppings Lane end (that's the same stand used in the Tragedy of 89) into the open terrace at the opposite end where Blues had been allocated all the ticket

remember both those games like yesterdfasy…...I was at that famous Manchester City / storming of the Kippax too.....that was the opening game of the 1973/74 season......Hatton again scored for Blues, I think Rodney Marsh scored one or maybe two for them, they had Denis Law in their side too , we again played in the red penguin that day …..still think red is an unlucky colour for us to this day
