MIDDLE OF OUR GOAL
Can we not just refuse to play any shots that might score us runs? 8 hours of sticking your bat in the way and just tapping the ball away?

McLeish cricket?

Agree...moving Denley to opener for this Test was just trying to paper over the cracks, as they have no grit.... 🤣

Should of been banned for life.
The fickle Aussie fans will forget the shame him and the others bought to the game and their country when they retain the Urn sometime today

Yep and Cummins has been superb too.

cummins and hazelwood have been great for the aussies as have broad and archer for england.
i think we we have struggled a bit in the 3rd and 4th seamer department. siddle, pattinson and starc have the edge over woakes stokes and overton.

jimmy was a massive miss for us in what was always felt like a series where the bowlers would be in charge.

not blaming the bowlers in any way though. our batting has been woeful and ultimately smith will be the difference between the teams. that dismissal of buttler yesterday sums it up for me. we had just saved the follow on. bat on for as long as you can. take some time out of the game. 30 minutes/60 minutes anything. leach has proved he can hold an end up and what happens... buttler out clean bowled swinging across the line. brainless.

as bad as we've been we've had our chances as well.

we let them off the hook at edgbaston from 122/8 and probably would have won at lords but for the weather.

Yep. Also first innings of this test we could’ve got them out for 150 less if we didn’t fall apart in the field.

Yeah exactly this, a lot has been said about this being a contest between two similar batting and bowling sides with Smith being an exceptional outlier but the approach in the field by both teams has been completely different. The Aussies have maintained that pressure, pressure builds and takes wickets, their discipline has been relelentless the only time it let them down was towards the end of the Headingly test when the pressure got to them. England conversely have been so profligate in the field, not just through dropped catches but sloppy fielding and not applying that pressure but waiting for the next wicket. For me Clive, its been a big difference between the teams and is a critical area where small margins can make a big difference.

As much of a good player he is, I don't think root is a good captain.
As you say not enough pressure at the right times, not using his bowlers right either.
But who else is there?
09:56, Sun 8 Sep
Buttler for me. Responsibility will do him good as well re his batting.

Morgan as coach. Appreciate that probably won't happen

The Aussies have just been better

Steve Smith has been better, not much else has come near. His innings today was great to watch. Some of the strokes for four were lovely.

Been at old Trafford yesterday and today, Australia have just produced at the right time. England's batting has been mixed as usual.

England will have to bat about 8 hours to save the game. Doubtful.
We have taken 1 more wicket so far this series, they have scored 515 more runs. Of course we are battling now with 8 wickets left. It's been a good series, close, but their team has been better
