Originally broadcast in the Spring of last year I only saw it on Gold this weekend.

Group of 30 voted for by the public and then sorted into a top 30 by an eclectic panel of British comedians.

30. Kathy Burke
29. Rik Mayall
28. Michael McIntyre
27. Micky Flanagan
26. Bill Bailey
25. Stewart Lee
24. Eddie Izzard
23. Lee Evans
22. Jo Brand
21. Dave Allen
20. Rowan Atkinson
19. Sir Lenny Henry
18. Sacha Baron Cohen
17. Lee Mack
16. Ronnie Barker
14. Dawn French (tie)
14. Jennifer Saunders (tie)
13. Tommy Cooper
12. John Cleese
11. Caroline Aherne
10. Ken Dodd
9. Peter Kay
8. Spike Milligan
6. Steve Coogan (tie)
6. Ricky Gervais (tie)
5. Eric Morecambe
4. Peter Sellers
3. Billy Connolly
2. Victoria Wood
1. Stanley Laurel

Some interesting nominations there, I personally think the likes of McIntyre and Brand are about as funny as a Frenchman and would definitely would have had Mayall a lot higher up in the list.

All subjective though so what are your thoughts?

Lee Mack above Rik Mayall and Eddie Izzard? Really?

To be fair, Lee Mack is amazingly quick witted and sharp. In terms of prepared performances he probably doesn’t stack up against Mayall (not a fan of Izzard personally), but he is a very clever comedian.

Comedian? Or comic actor?

Stan Laurel, Peter Sellers and John Cleese were comic actors, they by and large delivered scripts ( which they often co-wrote and often extemporised).

If it was just a stand-up comedian, then in the last fifty years it has to be the Big Yin.
