Was done for betting on football when on loan to us .
£46k on one bet . Christ I sweat if I put a tenner on .
Rehab followed shortly .
Disgusting really but I do recognise it's an illness. 46k ffs

I don't. Illness isn't a choice ( eg you cant choose whether you have cancer or not) but you do still have a choice whether you put a bet on as tough as that may be
I am sympathetic but it's not an illness

Having been in a similar situation myself, I disagree. It is a mental illness for many.

👍 It's an addiction, therefore the individual loses choice over their behaviour until they seek help.

Don't think you understand how the brain works to someone who is mentally ill.
Very closed minded.

Addiction to anything definitely is a mental illness.
If any of us went to prison tomorrow and was told we were never going to be released, we would all become depressed immediately.
Would that mean we we have attained a health problem?
Or would we have failed to take personal responsibility?
In the later stages, yes, an addiction can fall out of your control.
But it was 100% in your control in the early stages.
And I wish anyone who does have an addiction all the best in their recovery.
Feeling depressed and having clinical depression isn’t the same thing.

Absolutely this.

You could argue that you can't choose the type of brain you've been born with. You might not be as susceptible to the kind of triggers that cause a person to get hooked on gambling so may not appreciate how difficult it is to stop.
There's also an argument about the choices one makes in one's life that might lead to an illness like cancer but that's a very complex argument.
Good thing that I didn't say they were the same thing then.

There is a fine line though. Feeling depressed from time to time is a normal human emotion that is reactive. Feeling depressed on a regular basis with no rationale or reason for it can easily and quickly result in clincal depression

You’re right but at the time of feeling depressed I’d imagine it’s very difficult to see one from the other
