Was the gladiator the one in that arcade at the top of broad street?
Used to go there at lunchtime with an old work buddy to throw darts and drink beer. Was a proper old school locals place. Tool us a good few weeks before they stopped looking at us funny.
That was the Crusader
That's the chap.
Used to have pints of 'special' for about £1.50. Sure it was from the beer spill.
Place made national headlines in the more sensationalist papers when two regulars decided to settle their differences in the boxing ring. Paul Maroney was one of em,well known around Harborne. Lost in first round as I recall.

The George and Dragon, Small Heath? My local for many a year.
The first time I made a serious attempt to give up the booze was when I came out of there after a lunchtime session on my way to the match, getting on the 58 bus and mistakenly asking the bus driver for a pint of Carling.

Me grandad lived opposite the Prince of Wales.
Every Sunday before dinner he'd take us on a stroll to the Colebrook, Baldwin, Lodge, then the Prince before stumbling home to be berated by Nana for running an hour late.
Always used to pick up trays of plants/ pickled onions & all sorts of pub contraband on the way round.
Happy days.
