Jimmy Nail was a surprise guest at the 40th anniversary event of AWP held in Newcastle a few days ago.
Had the email. Would have loved to have been there
I can remember watching the first ever episode as a 15 year old. Had to set the video for my dad as he was working that evening.
I can hear him now "Make sure you set the video and not your mother or she will set it for songs of praise or the two Ronnie's"
From then on I recorded every episode on my own tapes so that they could not be recorded over.
It’s my go to show. And has been a big part of my viewing habits for most of life. Love the bastards. Brilliantly cast and written
I met Barry (Timothy Spall) at Victoria Falls - surreal, I was wearing a Blues t-shirt at the time too and had a photo with him.
ThongsWere you 10 at the time?

I used to love the series - I thought Jimmy Nail was bloody brilliant.
I used to drink in the same pub as his older sister and knew her a bit, she was involved in setting up what has become a pretty famous local theatre up here. Her brother Jimmy was by repute a character you were advised not to get on the wrong side of, I met him a few times and chatted to him before he became well known - I’d say his character in the series was not a million miles from the bloke I chatted to as far as I could tell. Tim Healey used to hang around there too. Newcastle is a relatively small place.
I used to see Bomber in the paper shop on Wash Lane in Yardley fairly often.
Was always a bit starstruck 🫣
Loved the series, Barry’s terrible brummie accent excepted…
Barry was Black Country! The something and something table tennis club…
West Bromwich Sunday Methodist league mixed doubles runners I think.
wookieBarry evolved into a great character.I used to see Bomber in the paper shop on Wash Lane in Yardley fairly often.
