They’re the rules.
3 points for winning in 90 minutes
2 points for winning on pens
1 point for losing on pens
0points for losing in 90 minutes. There has to be a winning and losing side. We lost. I’m not having a dig at us, I still love us. But we lost on pens
It's one point for winning the penalties.
One point for the draw, one point for penalties.
Super HansI honestly think it’s a great way to decide group gamesShit rules for a shit trophy.

Rab C NesbittWe lost the pens, but we didn’t lose the match. The rule book says 0 points are awarded for a defeat. The club that wins the penalty shootout will be awarded an additional point, there is no reference to the shootout winner winning the match. The official table has it as a draw. It’s a draw.TandyThey’re the rules.We lost on penalties.
Why did we get a point then?
3 points for winning in 90 minutes
2 points for winning on pens

Rab C NesbittThis is what rule 5.11(i) says:TandyThey’re the rules.We lost on penalties.

If the scores are level at the end of the Group Match then each Club is awarded one point. In addition the Match will be followed immediately by
the taking of kicks from the penalty mark in accordance with procedures as approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and the Club that wins the penalty shootout will be awarded an additional one point.
So the match was a draw and the shoot-out was a Brucey bonus.
The penalties make it feel like we lost I suppose because that is what we are all used to with penalties. Group games with 4 teams in other tournaments have been fine for many a year without these ice hockey style points systems thrown in to make it that little bit more exciting. Typing this has just made me think about those insane running from the halfway line penalities in the US
They tried it in the Yugoslav league from 1988-89 - 2 for a win, 1 for a draw with a shoot-out win, and 0 for a draw with a shoot-out loss (or a loss). Had an effect on the champions in the first season; FK Vojvodina would have been a point behind Red Star Belgrade under a normal system but were mint on pens. The idea was to make Yugoslavia stronger in competition shoot-outs, literally every Yugoslav player would have gone through it.
The rules also state that if points are level in a group, the teams are separated by:
(i) goal difference;
(ii) higher number of goals scored in the Group Matches;
(iii) number of wins (after normal time i.e. not the result of any drawn match followed by penalties);
Simple question but seen a lot saying we didn’t lose.
Others saying Walsall won on pens.
So did we lose?
Yes or no…..
Oops
