I can't remember the full story but Shane played some part in the Jam getting their first deal with Polydor. He was mates with A&R man Chris Parry, who is credited as discovering the band. MacGowan pushed Parry into going to see them.

That’s interesting, as Paul Weller later produced Shane’s previous band The Nips (formerly The Nipple Erectors) single Happy Song.

Huge fan and saw him many times - the last was 20 years ago in Cork with the Popes. Great night but you could see he was failing, missing lines, etc. May he rest easy in heaven or be raking at the gates of hell tonight.

I'll be with them asleep or dreaming
I'll be there when they wake up screaming
In the hour of death I'll nurse them
To have a moment more to curse them

Mothers eyes are sparkling diamonds
Still the moon, shows no light
This rose is withered, may god deliver
The rake at the gates of hell tonight.

Shane MacGowan’s funeral is tomorrow. Some of my family in Nenagh will be there. Wish I could have gone over
