Mister Mutley
He comes from that way.

From Middlesbrough, same as our manager, hopefully related in some way đŸ€ž

Would be ironic that Mowbray got sacked for asking for a more senior striker and then they went and got one in January anyway, but have an inferior manager to now handle him.

Would be even sweeter if we nicked him after all that...

He's still only a lad from the fourth division.

Every time I see something on social media about our strikers someone pipes up with ‘what we need is a 20+ goals a season striker’.

In the last 3 seasons there have been a total of 12 players that have managed to score 20+ goals.

Quite a few of those were players who had stayed with relegated teams.

It’s highly unlikely that we are going to magic up a 20+ striker on our budget.

That leaves us with either, getting very lucky with an academy player (which will take time), doing what other teams have done and find more goals from other areas of the team or get very, very lucky with a gamble on a player like this.

If we’ve got the budget, I think it’s probably worth a try. However, if we did sign him and he didn’t score in the first few games, how long would our fans give him?

You don't necessarily need one either.

Based on nothing at all I'd say that you should expect your attacking midfielders to chip in with 5-10 and your centre halves to get 3-5 meaning you can get away with your strikers being 1 in 3 types and getting 12-15 goals and you'll be fine.

You don't want to be reliant on one goalscorer anyway.

It's interesting looking at the players who have managed 20+ goals... There were 3 last year and if you look at their previous records, I don't think any of them would have got too us excited if we'd been linked with them at the time.

Carlton Morris - Luton signed him for £1.3m when he was 25. Prior to joining, his best season resulted in 7 goals in the Championship for Barnsley. Before that, he'd played in League 2 and never really scored that much... He'd never managed double figures in a season throughout his entire career. Suddenly he has a great season and fires them to promotion.

Viktor Gyökeres - Brighton picked him up and never played him. He got sent out on loan to St Pauli, Swansea and Coventry managing a total of 10 goals in 56 games across all 3 clubs. Not bad but not spectacular... In his half-season on loan at Coventry, he only managed 3 goals in 19 games. They signed him permanently in summer and he started firing them in regularly.

Chuba Akpom - Bounced around on loan achieving very little in terms of goals for the best part of a decade. He then went off to play in Greece for a few years where he never got more than 8 goals in a season. He moved to Boro and scored 5 goals in 38 games before being loaned back to Greece. When he returned to Boro, he was told to train with the U21 squad. He was brought back into the first team squad and scored 2 goals in a match so got another chance and then never stopped scoring. Ajax paid £12m for him at the end of the season.

It just shows that it's really not about past success. You don't have to find someone who has regularly scored lots of goals - you have to find the right striker who will benefit from the way your team plays and then hope to get lucky! Obviously the more you scout them, the better chance you're giving yourself of it working but with strikers, it either clicks or it doesn't (or you spend ridiculous amounts of money...)

I remember when Gyokeres wasn’t doing much at Swansea and someone suggested he might suit us
an idea which was roundly and rather rudely ridiculed by the SHA scouting network.

Yep I've said this many times on here.

The twenty goals a season man thing is extremely rare. It becomes even more rare in the modern era as clubs further up the pyramid will gamble.

For perspective 1 in 3 is very decent for a striker, that is 15 per season.
